Embarking on the entrepreneurial journey requires more than just a vision; it demands the courage to test one’s strength and capacity to build, grow, and sustain a company. Barbara Ngabo, the visionary behind Brangabo Build Construction and The YHVH Construction Block Factory, based in the UK and Uganda, embodies this spirit of resilience and passion for turning ideas into tangible realities.
Early Passions and Foundations:
From a young age, Barbara’s passion for making a difference was evident. Her dedication to addressing the daily challenges faced by women and girls in terms of safe homesteads, water, and sanitation fueled her desire to create lasting solutions. Starting her journey as a nurse, Barbara’s path took a turn when she began making building blocks for her own home, unveiling a latent passion for mechanical engineering and the art of building.
The Evolution into Construction:
Post-graduation, Barbara delved into the world of consulting and construction development companies, honing her skills in structural projects. Immersed in a culture of attention to detail and mentorship in Sweden, she then transitioned to a UK-based consulting company, gaining exposure to the project management side of civil engineering.
The Birth of YHVH Construction:
In 2012, Barbara founded YHVH Construction with a mission to directly impact communities and to test her mettle in building, growing, and sustaining a company. The name itself is a blend of letters from Hebrew GODS names, symbolizing a commitment to excellence and divine inspiration. YHVH Construction focuses on building products, water and structural design, integrating green technology with solar energy for water heating and lighting in constructed houses. The company has successfully serviced residential stands and undertaken house constructions in Uganda.
Brangabo Build: A UK Venture with a Global Vision:
In 2020, Barbara extended her entrepreneurial journey with the formation of Brangabo Build, a UK-based construction company. Specializing in design, construction, and interior decor, Brangabo Build represents a new chapter in Barbara’s commitment to excellence and innovation.
Challenges Faced and Lessons Learned:
As a black African woman in engineering, Barbara has faced assumptions about her gender and encountered low awareness of women in engineering within Uganda. Overcoming challenges of capital and establishing her reputation in the construction circles, she emphasizes the importance of partnerships and learning from established companies. Referrals and a relentless commitment to quality have been crucial in proving herself as an engineer.
Life-Changing European Experience:
Barbara’s stint in Sweden and the UK has been transformative. Building relationships, forming sisterhoods, and witnessing the impact of young women in construction globally have fueled her zeal. Inspired by powerful individuals making a difference, Barbara returned to Uganda with a renewed energy and determination to contribute to African growth.
In the tapestry of Barbara Ngabo’s journey, Brangabo Build and YHVH Construction stand as testaments to passion, resilience, and the power of creating lasting impact. The path may be challenging, but Barbara’s story exemplifies how one woman’s vision can inspire change and elevate communities.
